IBM Data Server Manager in a Diverse User Environment at Argonne National Laboratory

Session ID: DMT-1052 (link) | 2016-10-25 | 05:00 PM - 05:45 PM

In most corporate organizations, Windows is the dominant platform for developers, DBAs, system administrators and end-users. At Argonne National Laboratory, the desktop operating systems include Mac OS X, SLES, Ubuntu, RHEL, Debian and Windows. That being said, I arrived in an environment where developers and users either solely used the DB2 CLI, or they were forced into running Windows within a VM so that they can use IBM Data Studio. IBM Data Server Manager (DSM) has allowed me to engage the developers and users so that we can get the most benefit out of our DB2 LUW investment while producing better code. DSM has allowed me to create a self-service environment so that developers can understand their code.

Session ID: DMT-1444 (link) | 2016-10-27 | 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM

The recently released DB2 for LUW 11.1 is the foundation for hybrid cloud database deployments. In addition to being available to install on cloud-based infrastructure (through a bring-your-own-license approach, which now includes monthly DB2 Direct licensing) DB2 11.1 is also the foundation of IBM?s DB2 on Cloud and dashDB cloud data service offerings. With a common SQL engine, you can write once and run anywhere. Learn more about these different options and when you?d want to choose one over another. Considerations such as type of workload, hosted versus managed, and simplicity versus flexibility are explored. New flavors of dashDB, such as dashDB for transactions and dashDB Local, will also be covered.

Making Data Warehouses More Agile: DB2 with BLU Acceleration at Zurich Insurance Group

Session ID: DMT-2659 (link) | 2016-10-26 | 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Zurich Insurance Group is the largest Swiss insurance company and one of the 100 largest public companies worldwide. It had data warehouses and data marts based on DB2 with the DPF, but faced several challenges: Users wanted to run more complex and new types of queries while demanding faster responses at the same time. New queries continuously appearing prevented optimizing of individual queries with indexes and MQTs. There was also cost pressure. This presentation shows how Zurich Insurance addressed all these challenges by migrating to DB2 with BLU Acceleration. We show how much performance improved and how much less resources were needed (and how costs were saved by this), and present the lessons learned from this project.
